Industrial Grade Extruded Silicone Tube: Getting The Dimensions Right

When purchasing an Industrial Grade Extruded Silicone Tube, it is easy to focus on the material, temperature resistance, or application first. But for many industrial installations, dimensional accuracy is just as important.

A tube can have the right material and still be difficult to use if its inside diameter, outside diameter, wall thickness, or length does not match the actual installation.

Inside Diameter Determines the Connection

The inside diameter is usually the first dimension to confirm because it needs to correspond with the component, fitting, or pipe being connected.

However, the required size should not be estimated from the nominal pipe size alone.

The actual connection method matters. A tube installed over a fitting may require a different fit from one inserted into another component. The required clearance, insertion depth, and sealing method should therefore be considered before confirming the final diameter.

For custom orders, providing the actual mating component or connection dimensions can be more useful than simply stating a nominal size.

Outside Diameter Matters Too

The outside diameter is often overlooked when specifying silicone tubing.

This becomes important when the tube is installed with a clamp, through a hole, inside a guide, or alongside other components.

For example, two tubes can have the same inside diameter but different wall thicknesses. Their outside diameters will therefore be different, which may affect the available installation space or the selection of the corresponding clamp or fitting.

Wall Thickness Changes the Tube's Behavior

Wall thickness is not simply a dimensional value.

The correct choice depends on how the tube will be installed and used.

Avoid Excessive Stretching During Installation

One common installation mistake is using a tube that is slightly undersized and relying on stretching to make it fit over a larger connection.

Silicone tubing is flexible, but flexibility should not be confused with unlimited stretchability.

Excessive stretching can reduce the wall thickness around the connection and may place additional stress on the material. It can also make the connection more difficult to secure correctly.

The tube should ideally fit the connection without requiring excessive force.

Check the Tube After Installation

Once an industrial silicone tube has been installed, check the connection before putting the system into regular operation.

Look for:

Uneven compression around the connection

Excessive bending near the fitting

Kinks or flattened sections

Contact with sharp edges

Interference with moving components

Signs of leakage after operation

For longer tubing runs, supporting the tube at appropriate points can also help prevent unnecessary movement or sagging.

Provide Complete Information When Ordering

A more complete request should include the inside diameter, outside diameter or wall thickness, length, working temperature, pressure conditions, transported medium, connection method, and installation environment.

Getting the dimensions right at the specification stage can reduce installation problems later and make the finished tube much easier to integrate into the system.
